Auntie Yatie's Café
Cajal Bodies drew an eleven-page design set for Auntie Yatie's Café in Bara, South Sulawesi: plans, elevations and sections a local builder can work from.
Auntie Yatie's Café is a small café on the coast a few minutes north of Tanjung Bira. The brief was a set a builder can actually work from, not a visualisation: plans, elevations and sections at a scale you can hold a tape measure against, with every height, length and width on the drawing.
The interesting problem was the roof. The ceiling heights the client wanted put the café roof at eight degrees and the loft roof at six, and alang-alang thatch needs thirty or more before it sheds water. Rather than quietly pick one and lose either the look or the waterproofing, both numbers went back to her as numbers. She chose to split the difference, so thatch now runs as an eight-hundred-millimetre apron at the eave, where it is the thing you see, and long-run galvalume does the actual waterproofing behind it at low pitch.
The set is drawn and reviewed. It has not been issued to the client yet and nothing is built, so there is no photography here and none is invented.
